Thailand Then and Now: Comparative Reflection

Thailand: Embracing Change, Enriching Horizons.

Thailand and tourism – In some areas, issues such as insufficient water distribution, inadequate waste management, and below-standard safety measures in public spaces present challenges for both locals and tourists. Additionally, Bangkok’s infamous traffic congestion remains a deterrent for potential visitors to Thailand.

Nevertheless, tourism continues to be a vital component of the Thai economy. In 2023, the country saw approximately 28 million international tourists. The revenue generated from tourism plays a crucial role in enhancing the country’s infrastructure, including its transport systems, electricity supply, and telecommunications. Moreover, tourism creates job opportunities for locals and serves as a platform for showcasing Thai culture to the rest of the world. Most tourists are drawn to Thailand for its unparalleled natural beauty, further highlighting the significance of tourism to the nation’s economy and cultural promotion efforts.

Altogether, we spent a little over two months in Thailand. The first month was in 2017, a few years before Jayden was born. During this time, we indulged in business class flights and luxurious villas with private chefs. The second month was in 2023, when Jayden was 2.5 years old. We were more budget-conscious, opting for affordable hotels and exploring various locations across the country to experience new places.

Places We Stayed

Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket, Koh Yao Yai, Phi Phi, Railay Beach and Koh Samui.

A woman in a pink swimsuit holds a child in a yellow hat in clear turquoise water. Tall cliffs and greenery are in the background. The scene is sunny and joyful.
Family stands in turquoise ocean near lush, rocky cliffs under a partly cloudy sky. The child sits on the man's shoulders, conveying joy and togetherness.
People swim in clear emerald water near traditional longtail boats. Towering limestone cliffs, lush with greenery, rise dramatically in the background.
SO, HOW DOES THAILAND COMPARE, AND WHAT HAS CHANGED IN OUR OPINION?

Quite a lot is changing in Thailand; to sum it up briefly, the country is becoming more westernized.

Thai People Are Increasingly Proficient in English

More Thai people speak proficient English, and many street vendors can communicate in basic phrases from various languages, including Czech. Instead of “khob khun ka/krub,” or “sawadee ka/krub” you hear more “thank yous” and “hellos.” I have to admit, while this makes things easier for tourists when ordering, negotiating, or simply communicating, I do miss the old Thai ways of speaking.

Thailand is Experiencing Westernization

Thai people have become more business savvy, and in many ways, they’ve adjusted to accommodate Western visitors. It seems beneficial for everyone, doesn’t it? But is it truly advantageous? While services have become top-notch, and Western food is widely available, along with convenient access to hair, nails, or lash services, one has to wonder: Didn’t you come here to explore an exotic foreign country, including its way of life and spicy cuisine?

Technology

Thailand has witnessed rapid technological advancements, resulting in more Wi-Fi access for tourists but also increased screen time for local children. I mean, kids are glued to them. It’s probably inevitable everywhere, but I just didn’t expect to see so many kids absorbed in their phones. You’re living in paradise! ?

Infrastructure

Dirt roads transformed into paved roads, small markets evolved into malls with fast food, and quiet places turned into tourist attractions. It’s all convenient and probably natural, but one can’t help but wonder: what changes are truly beneficial?

What Hasn’t Changed?

The overall beauty of Thailand!

I’ve fallen in love with Thailand every time I’ve visited, and I hope to go back many more times. The people are friendly, I always feel safe, and the food is still one of my favorites.
