What to Do in Malibu  California

Whether you’re into surfing, sunbathing, or just strolling along the shore with your toes in the sand, there’s a beach here with your name on it. My personal fave? Zuma Beach in Malibu, with its wide expanse of sand and epic sunsets that’ll leave you breathless.

What to Do in Malibu California

Take a Drive Up The Scenic Pacific Coast Highay (PCH)

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) isn’t just a road—it’s an experience. This iconic drive stretches 656 miles (1,056 km) from Dana Point in Southern California all the way up to Leggett in the north, offering breathtaking ocean views, rugged cliffs, and hidden coves along the way.

  • Scenic Highlights: Cruise through famous spots like Malibu, Santa Monica, Big Sur, Monterey, and even across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
  • Epic Views: With the Pacific Ocean on one side and dramatic cliffs on the other, every mile is picture-perfect.
  • Best Way to Experience It: Got the roof down? Even better—this drive was made for the ultimate open-road adventure.
  • Road Safety: The PCH is stunning but also winding and occasionally dangerous, especially around Malibu. If you’re pulling over for a photo op or crossing the road, stay alert!

Hike Up to The Iconic Point Dume

  • Parking:

– The main parking lot at Point Dume is tiny—it only fits about eight cars and fills up quickly, especially on weekends and before sunset. If it’s full:

– Check neighboring streets, but read the signs carefully—many require residential permits.

– Another option is to park down at the beach and hike up to the viewpoint.

  • Restrooms: Public restrooms are available down on the beach, but bring hand sanitizer.

  • Wildlife Viewing: Keep an eye out for sea lions lounging on the rocks below. If you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins or whales passing through during migration season.
  • Movie Trivia: The final scene of the original Planet of the Apes was filmed at Pirates Cove (look for the Statue of Liberty icon on the small map). Many people mistakenly think it was filmed elsewhere, but this is the exact location!

  • You may also spot rock climbers in this area.

  • Best Sunset Spot: Head to the rock marked with the photo icon for the best sunset views.

  • Scenic Walk: I mapped out our favorite path to walk—this route offers the most scenic views.

  • Weather Tip: It can get chilly and windy, especially in the evening—so bring a jacket, even if it feels warm when you arrive.

Dine at Malibu Pier While Watching The Sunset

Built in the 1940s, the pier has become a global sensation and an iconic emblem of Malibu. It’s starred in countless movies and TV shows, earning its place in the spotlight. At the pier, you can catch people fishing, shopping, dining, and sipping on refreshing drinks. Consider it the perfect place for a bit of coastal therapy and maybe even a touch of celebrity spotting

Preventing Fires in Southern California

Fires in Southern California are an almost yearly occurrence and are always heartbreaking. They devastate communities, displacing people, animals, and destroying homes. Many of these fires are caused by human actions and negligence. I am sharing a few photos from the Malibu fire in 2020, which struck close to home for us. This serves as a reminder that open fires are only permitted in designated areas, and it is crucial to fully extinguish any fire before leaving. Let’s all do our part to prevent such tragedies.
