Olpererhütte & Suspension Bridge tips
If you’re craving stunning alpine vistas, crystal-clear lakes, and a dose of adventure, the hike to Olpererhütte Hut in Austria is a must. Situated at 2,389 meters (7,837 ft) in the Zillertal Alps, the Olpererhütte offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including the iconic suspension bridge that overlooks the turquoise Schlegeis Reservoir.
Getting There
From Mayrhofen in the Zillertal Valley, you can reach the trailhead by either bus or car. The drive to the Schlegeis Reservoir is about 22 km (14 miles), taking approximately 30 minutes.
-
By Car: Driving is the easiest option, but there’s a €17 toll per car. Parking at the Schlegeis Reservoir fills up quickly during peak season. If parking is full, you may need to return and take the bus. Campers aren’t allowed at the reservoir, so if you’re traveling in one, you’ll need to park elsewhere and take the bus.
-
By Bus: Bus 4102 runs between Mayrhofen and Schlegeis. Mayrhofen has a large parking lot near the visitor center, where you can park and get more information. The bus costs about €10 per person (one way). We left our camper at Ginzling at Breitlahner Gasthaus – see photo (the last stop before Schlegeis) to shorten the bus ride (20 minutes compared to 50 minutes from Mayrhofen). Parking at Breitlahner was €20 for a camper, while a car costs €6 per day. From there, the bus costs around €3 per person (cash). The walk from the bus station to the trailhead (see photo) takes about 10 minutes, with signs guiding the way.
The Hike
The hike to Olpererhütte is moderately challenging and accessible for hikers with some experience or decent fitness. We brought along our 4-year-old, who made it to the top with plenty of rest breaks and snacks. The round-trip hike covers about 6.4 kilometers, with an elevation gain of 600 meters.
- Trail Difficulty: Moderate
- Distance: 3.2 km to the hut, 6.4 km round-trip
- Elevation Gain: 600 m
- Duration: 2 hours up, 1.5 hours down
The well-marked path zigzags through rocky terrain, offering stunning views of the reservoir and surrounding peaks. It’s a steady but manageable climb, perfect for those looking to enjoy the scenery without overly technical challenges.
The Olpererhütte
Stepping into Olpererhütte feels like arriving in an alpine paradise. The hut offers traditional Austrian dishes such as Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes) and hearty soups, with vegan options available—perfect for refueling after your hike. On sunny days, the outdoor terrace is the ideal place to relax, take in the panoramic views, and spot wildlife like ibexes roaming the mountainsides.
The hut is also a starting point for more advanced hikes and offers overnight accommodations for those looking to extend their alpine adventure. Whether you’re here for a day hike or an extended stay, Olpererhütte’s rustic charm and hospitality are a rewarding experience.
The Iconic Suspension Bridge
Just a short 3-minute walk behind the hut is the famous suspension bridge. This narrow bridge offers a spectacular photo opportunity, with the Schlegeis Reservoir as a dramatic backdrop. Be prepared for crowds, especially during peak season. We visited in the second week of September and, after starting our hike at noon on a hot day, reached the bridge around 3 PM. Despite the timing, we still had to wait about 30 minutes to get our photos. The setup usually involves one person walking up to the stream to take the photo, and then switching, so patience is key. Also, even though it was 30°C at the start, it was chilly and windy up here, so be prepared for cooler conditions.
Tips for the Hike
Start Early: The trail can get crowded, especially in summer. Starting early helps you avoid the crowds and enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery. If you want to take a photo on the suspension bridge, note that it gets shadowed in the afternoon.
Dress in Layers: Mountain weather changes quickly. Even in summer, temperatures at the hut can be cool, so pack layers and a waterproof jacket.
Bring Cash: The Olpererhütte hut accepts cards, but you’ll need cash for the bus and any smaller expenses.
Bring Water and Snacks: It’s important to stay hydrated and energized. Protein bars or small snacks are helpful.
Take Your Time: While the hike is moderately challenging, it’s important to pace yourself and enjoy the surroundings. There are plenty of scenic spots to stop and take in the views.
Can kids manage this hike? Absolutely! We brought our 4-year-old, and it was his longest hike so far. He was probably the youngest walker we saw, although there were a few babies and toddlers in the carrier.
Routes and Season
There are four different routes you can take to reach Olpererhütte, with this one being the shortest. The hiking season typically runs from June to September, weather permitting.
