17 Hour Layover in Dubai with Kid

Traveling with little kids can feel like an extreme sport—one wrong move, and you’re in meltdown territory. It’s like navigating a minefield, armed only with snacks and a silent prayer. That’s why we’ve started planning strategic layovers—not just to avoid mid-air disasters but to turn those long stopovers into mini-adventures.

For this trip, we had 17 hours in Dubai, and I was determined to make the most of it. Here’s how it went, what worked, what didn’t, and some tips to help you maximize your own layover.

Morning: A Slow Start at Jumeirah Beach

We landed around 7 AM, with our next flight not until midnight, giving us plenty of time to explore. In true over-planner fashion, I had everything mapped out—rental car booked, stops planned, and opening hours noted. But here’s the thing: renting a car takes longer than expected, and if your travel buddy (aka my husband) is too tired to drive, you might need to rethink your entire itinerary.

So, lesson learned: ease up on the schedule and leave room for flexibility!

Our first stop was Jumeirah Beach Park (20 AED parking, which we totally forgot to pay—oops!). The beach was practically empty, so we grabbed a coffee, let Jayden play in the sand, and soaked in the view of the iconic Burj Al Arab before moving on.

We then took a scenic drive around Palm Jumeirah and made a quick stop at Hotel Atlantis. Without a day pass, there wasn’t much to do, but it was still worth seeing.

Midday: Getting Lost in Flowers at Miracle Garden

One stop we absolutely didn’t want to miss? Miracle Garden—the world’s largest natural flower garden. And trust me, it’s just as magical as it sounds. At 95 AED ($26) per adult, it’s totally worth it, and bonus—kids under 3 get in for free!

We spent around two hours wandering through floral tunnels, snapping a million photos, and eventually collapsing in the shade for a much-needed lunch break.

A large airplane model is covered in white and green flowers, branded with "Emirates." Surrounding it are vibrant pink and white blossoms, set against a clear blue sky.
A child in a cap stands beside a purple bicycle adorned with vibrant flowers, in a garden with colorful floral sculptures and clear blue sky. Joyful, playful scene.
A woman in a pink dress holds a child on stairs adorned with vibrant pink and purple flowers, leading to a lush, garden-like structure.
A man carries a child on his shoulders in a vibrant flower garden with purple and white blooms. Large Smurf statues and decorative arches are in the background.

Afternoon: The Ultimate Desert Safari Experience

For the grand finale, we booked a Desert Safari. They picked us up at 2 PM, but here’s where things got a little tricky: we had to make two extra stops to pick up other travelers, cramming the car full. Next time? We’re splurging on a private tour—worth every penny for the comfort and flexibility.

After an hour-long drive, we arrived in the desert for quad biking. Even though we didn’t sign up for it, we had to wait while others zoomed around. It wasn’t the worst, but next time, I’d rather go straight to the fun stuff.

Dune Bashing & Sand Play

Next up was dune bashing, where a skilled driver (in our case, an old Toyota) takes you on a rollercoaster ride over the massive sand dunes. I was worried about Jayden, especially without a car seat, but he loved every second of it—laughing through every sharp turn and drop.

We then had a quick stop for photos and sand play, and here’s a pro tip: bring a flowing, bright-colored dress! Our driver took some incredible desert shots, and they’re still framed in our kitchen.

Evening: Arabian Nights Vibes

As the sun set, we arrived at camp for an evening of food, performances, and cultural experiences. There was plenty of delicious food (even for vegans!), plus henna tattoos, shisha, and live entertainment. It honestly felt like a desert rave we never knew we needed!

Finally, it was time to wrap up, return our car, and check in for our flight.

Layover Tips & Costs

Car Rental for a day

Should You Rent a Car?

If your layover is short and you’re doing a Desert Safari, skip the rental—they’ll pick you up and drop you off, hassle-free. But if you’re exploring multiple spots, having your own car is a game-changer.

Round Two: A Month Later…

A few weeks later, we had another layover in Dubai—this time shorter. We managed to squeeze in a trip to Old Dubai & the Souks, which I absolutely loved. We only caught a glimpse of the Burj Khalifa as we drove past, promising Jayden we’d take him up there when he’s older.

We skipped the fountain and Dubai Frame this time—because layovers = tough choices. And let’s be real, Dubai isn’t the easiest city to explore on foot.

Would I visit Dubai for a full-on vacation? Probably not. But as a layover destination? It’s perfect.

Final Thoughts: Making the Most of Your Dubai Layover

Don’t overplan. Things always take longer than expected, so leave room for flexibility.

Short layover? Skip the rental car. The Desert Safari tour includes pickup and drop-off, making things much easier.

Want those perfect desert shots? Bring a flowing dress—or ask if they have one available, like I did!

Surprisingly great food at the camp! Even for vegans, there’s plenty to eat—no need to pack extra snacks.

Layovers = mini adventures! Don’t just wait for your next flight—get out and explore.

Dune bashing with kids? Totally doable! No car seat needed, and Jayden loved every second of it.

Next time, I’d book a private tour. More comfort, fewer stops, and a customized experience!
