TRAVEL ESSENTIALS FOR YOU CARRY ON
Identification papers and documents – While it might seem obvious, I found myself channeling Niki Lauda on FWY 405 when my husband needed his green card while traveling to Mexico. Since then, I’ve adopted a habit of screenshotting important documents and storing them in a separate photo folder on my smartphone. However, it’s also wise to have physical copies of essential documents like your passport, ID, health insurance, and visa papers stored separately.
A pen – Can you please fill out this document? It’s a request we’re all familiar with, not necessarily our favorite, but sometimes necessary. Protocols evolve, and if unexpected forms arise, be prepared with your trusty pen.
Toiletry Bag – For long flights, I pack a small toiletry bag containing essentials like a toothbrush, travel-sized toothpaste, earplugs, hand lotion, hand sanitizer, lip balm, and face tissues, maybe even a sleep mask. To comply with liquid restrictions, I store them in a ziplock bag or transparent container, ensuring each item is under 100ml.
An extra pair of socks – Making yourself cozy during extended periods of sitting is easier without shoes on. Consider bringing along an extra pair of socks for added comfort or to ward off chilly toes. For long-haul flights, wearing compression stockings is recommended to reduce the risk of swollen legs and blood clots.
Neck pillow – Whether you’re unwinding with a good book or aiming to catch some Z’s, a quality pillow (especially for your neck) is indispensable! Keep discomfort at bay by bringing along a cozy pillow. Neck pillows are readily available at airports, and you’ll find some that are inflatable, perfect for saving luggage space.
Filtered water bottle – Opt for a filtered water bottle, or at the very least, a reusable one. Filtered bottles are especially useful when visiting places with non-potable tap water. Airport bottled water can be pricey, but you can easily refill your own bottle at water fountains.
Gum – Gum is a great item to keep on hand for several reasons. It can help with tummy relief, freshen your breath when brushing isn’t an option, give you a quick wake-up boost during plane naps, and ease ear pressure during take-off and landing.
Snack – I always ensure to pack snacks that I genuinely enjoy. Sitting in one position for an extended period can be quite uncomfortable, so having some delicious snacks on hand helps make the experience more bearable.
Facial moisturizer and hair tie – Facial moisturizer and a hair tie are essential during flights. Ever experienced that static hair and tight, dry skin feeling mid-flight? There’s nothing quite like the relief of pulling your hair into a ponytail and applying moisturizer. Ahh, instant comfort.
Electronics – Don’t forget to pack your electronics along with their chargers and headphones. Whether it’s your iPad, phone, or laptop, having them charged means you can keep yourself entertained. And let’s face it, airport-provided headphones are usually subpar, so bringing your own is a must.
Medicine – It’s essential to pack your prescription medication or basic pain relief. Dealing with a headache, toothache, or upset stomach during an 8-hour flight can be miserable. Remember to obtain a doctor’s note for any special medications or medical supplies like needles to avoid any issues at security.
Don’t forget to pack an extra set of clothes! There’s nothing quite like the refreshing feeling of taking a shower and changing into clean clothes after a long flight. It’s also a smart precaution in case your suitcase goes missing.
Credit card for lounge access – Accessing an airport lounge with a credit card can be a game-changer. Many credit cards offer lounge access as a perk, so it’s worth checking with your credit card company. Especially during longer layovers, lounges are a lifesaver, offering amenities like showers, complimentary food and drinks, and comfortable seating.
These are my must-pack items! While you can tailor your list based on your specific needs, I’ve found that whenever I’ve omitted any of these essentials, I’ve ended up regretting it.
